St Helena Island

St. Helena is one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands, situated some 1200 miles from the coast of West Africa. Discovered in 1502 by a Portuguese explorer, it was soon after earmarked by Dutch and English sailors. First used as an replenishing outpost, it didn’t take England long to realise its potential for keeping political prisoners. St. Helena Island is infamous for keeping prisoners of war, from the Napoleonic period to the Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars. Today St. Helena Island remains a British Overseas Territory and it’s natural beauty and exotic fauna and flora, make the island a tourist hot spot. One of its major attraction is Jonathan, a giant tortoise considered the oldest living land animal in the world.
