Changuu Island

Also known as Prison Island, Changuu was uninhabited until 1860, when a prison was built by the Sultan of Zanzibar to house rebellious slaves. Zanzibar became a British Protectorate in 1890 when further prisons were built, but instead these complexes functioned as hospitals, looking after yellow fever patients. 1919 saw the arrival of four, now critically endangered, giant tortoises as a gift from the British Governor of the Seychelles. Changuu is no longer a quarantine station, and its old prison houses the giant tortoises left on the island. Some of the newer prison buildings are now privately owned hotels.
