Gorée Island

Gorée Island, 5.2 km off the coast of Senegal, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1978. But, from the 15th to 19th centuries, the island saw many horrors as slaves were kept in dungeons on the island before being transported from Africa to Europe or America. Today tourists visit the infamous House of Slaves, one of the oldest houses on the island. As soon as slaves passed through its ‘door of no return’, they knew would never see their home again or never leave the island alive … Today the island is a stark reminder of the harsh realities of the slave trade, an important locus for cultural connections between Africa and the West, and a space for exchange and dialogue.
