Why did you feel you wanted to take on St Helena?I had what is called "A word of Knowledge" which said unique swims would open up for me. Well, what could be more unique than this swim?I would also like to challenge myself to more time in the water, after English Channel last year 12 hours 12 minutes, this swim may be 6 – 8 hours longer.Lastly, to see a place few get to see.
What did you incorporate / how did you prepare for your St Helena Swim?Dryland training twice a week. Squad training 3 times a week and built-up week by week to 30 plus kms (yes, I know not quite enough). Hoping my base will carry me through.
How were you feeling about the swim?I have huge respect for this mammoth swim. I go through short periods of doubt (am I ready) to, yes, I’ve got this.Sincerely grateful for a wonderful support team & my God who will carry me through the journey.
How did the swim go, other than being successful. What were the highs and lows?
I was surprised that I never felt like I would not finish (The same happened to me on the English Channel)Highs: There where many, the scenery is breathtaking and even whilst suffering, you cannot help but be grateful. The other high was seeing the sunrise . Lastly the way I was able to work through me ceased shoulder from around 12 hrs.
Low: Seeing a large shark (Gallipolis), which followed for a while (At least I stayed close to the boat after that (LOL).
How did you find the support boats/did they work for you?
100%, perfect 10 out of 10 score.
Is there anything in hindsight, you would have changed or introduced within training regime?
Yes, I was way undertrained (got away with it).
Is there anything that really sticks out relating to the swim ?
The incredible support team, the Saints on the island, easily the nicest people on the planet.
Would you recommend this swim to others and who would you recommend it for?
Highly recommend it to swimmers with strong minds (your body will take you where your mind believes)Toni Enderli | Troy Mayers | Ty Peterson | Jaco Rossouw | Roy Purdam

Howard James checks in with Angus, asking if he's okay and reminding Caren the emergency services are on standby if needed. Angus gives a solid "No, I'm completely fine." Howard gives the thumbs up to stand down the emergency crew.
Angus burst onto the scene like a jack-in-the-box, infectious energy and enthusiasm winning over everyone on the island. Having already built a following thanks to Howard James's shout-out, he declared his mission: to become the first male to attempt the St Helena swim.
His unorthodox approach had some raising eyebrows. Who arrives at a high-stakes swim bubbling with excitement, not solemn focus? But Angus was polite, engaging, and at times, almost too relaxed. At the meeting with swim support crews and SHG emergency planning, he said he was fully aware of the task ahead, drawing on lessons from his English Channel and numerous Robben Island swims.
Angus knew he hadn't reached his desired mileage in the build-up, admitting success would rely more on the mental game than physical prowess. He relied on the local support crews' knowledge, focusing on his stroke and pace. SHG welcomed the approach, and a window was agreed upon: 11 pm start, to be confirmed post-weather review.
Angus arrived at the wharf, where a crowd had formed to see him take on this huge goal. The local Baptist pastor, with whom Angus and his team had united, was there to see him off. This time, Angus was quiet, possibly nervous, a different Angus, and Caren, than we'd grown used to. It was endearing to see him take this moment seriously.
Angus's swim around St Helena was a testament to his unbreakable spirit and mental toughness. Throughout the 20-hour journey, he remained incredibly chirpy and positive, never once showing negativity. When he hit the halfway mark at 10 hours, Angus was okay with it, as he had planned for a 20-hour swim in his mind. He stayed unbelievably upbeat throughout, even taking time to do a video call to his grandchildren, who were beaming with pride on the other end of the line.
Angus's support team, who shared a bond with him through their church, worked seamlessly together, sticking to their plan and earning Angus's complete trust. Despite Angus's tendency to divert from the boat, which frustrated the team at times, he always acknowledged the signs to swim closer before diverting again. In the dark, this was mainly due to his dark goggles, a schoolboy error perhaps, but one he chose to utilise, relying on his instincts and the teams’ guidance.
The swell throughout the night was a significant challenge, with Angus finding himself in a "washing machine" at points, but with two support boats and many eyes, he was always safe. Angus had to swim on the left side of the boat as he only breathes to the right, which worked fine, but switching sides would have been beneficial at times. As dawn broke, his shoulder started to ache, and his left arm dragged, but he used drills, trusting his coach's guidance, to reduce the pain. He took anti-inflammatories only twice, preferring to rely on his mental toughness to push through the discomfort.
Angus suffered from severe chafing, which he attributed to skin folds, and despite looking rough, it didn't hinder his progress. His determination and focus were inspiring and witnessing him complete the swim was nothing short of amazing. Angus's swim grabbed everyone's hearts throughout Enchanted Isle and Seahawk Odessey, it was clear everyone was behind Angus to become successful.
As Angus touched the landing steps and returned to them after a brief wellbeing check and getting dressed, he was more than happy to talk to the crowd and thank them, as well as thanking the Lord, as he always does. The team’s trust in Angus and his abilities was clear, and in the end, it was a truly remarkable achievement.
The support team’s strategy and expertise played a crucial role in guiding Angus through the challenging conditions. Their knowledge of the waters and ability to navigate obstacles allowed Angus to focus on his swim. Angus's ability to adapt to the conditions and stay focused was a testament to his skill and determination. Overall, Angus's swim was an incredible achievement, showcasing his mental toughness and determination. One that the whole team are proud to be a part of, and one he and his grandchildren can talk about for years to come.
As an observer, I confirm that I witnessed the entirety of Angus McPherson’s swim around St Helena Island and can vouch that it was conducted unassisted in accordance with traditional rules of Marathon Swimming. All timing logs and tracker positions were accurate and recorded in real-time throughout the event. Any deviations or uncertainties related to the swim are noted in this document.

Graham Warren, a long-time friend whom Angus chose to share the adventure with, was Angus's primary support throughout his St Helena swim. New to supporting a swimmer, Graham's aim was to keep Angus on track, gently guiding him back to the planned feeding regime when he diverted. He consistently provided positive feedback in a calm and gentle manner, making him an asset to the team. For a first-time swim supporter, Graham did exceptionally well. Caren McPherson, Angus's wife, was on the boat at the start and rejoined around the halfway point. She was particularly effective at regaining Angus's attention when he drifted from the boat, and her approach complemented Graham's support nicely.
