Lake Malawi

Conquer Lake Malawi

The Ultimate Open Water Challenge with Open Water Africa
Discover Africa’s Great Lake

Straddling the borders of Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, Lake Malawi is a majestic African jewel. It ranks as the fourth-largest lake in the world by volume and the second-deepest on the continent. Stretching approximately 350 miles long and 47 miles wide, this breathtaking body of water boasts more species of fish than any other lake on the planet. Beneath its beauty lies a legendary test of endurance, earning the lake its place as one of the world’s prestigious Still Water 8 open water challenges.

The Challenge: Makanjila (Cape Ngombo) to Senga Bay

For brave swimmers ready to take on the ultimate test, the iconic 24km crossing from Makanjila to Senga offers a thrilling, bucket-list experience. Swimmers can expect warm waters ranging from 24 to 29 degrees Celsius and air temperatures around 26 to 30 + degrees Celsius. However, athletes must prepare for the lake’s formidable reputation. The crossing features strong currents and sudden and swells. Whether you choose to attempt an officially ratified marathon swim or undertake a non-traditional personal challenge, Open Water Africa is here to support your dream.
